چکیده

Fig. 3: 3D flow characteristics inside the VAD during the peak outflow phase (systole). The gray shaded area represents an iso-surface rendering of the magnitude data and shows the VAD geometry including pump chamber and valve systems at inand outlet. A: A novel valve design using a differently shaped valve support region resulted in improved VAD performance. In addition to improved filling of the out-flow cannula (red arrows compared to solid yellow arrow), vortex formation proximal to the in-flow valve was virtually eliminated. B: The effect of different operating conditions in the same VAD clearly resulted in considerable differences in VAD function. Compared to normal operating conditions, insufficient VAD filling resulted in reduced filling and velocities during out-flow. Insufficient emptying lead to impaired clearing of the pump chamber (small white arrows) while marinating high out-flow velocities (open yellow arrow). Vortex formation proximal to the inlet valve was clearly visible for all operating conditions (open white arrows)

Hemodynamic and exercise performance with pulsatile and continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices.

BACKGROUND Continuous-flow rotary pumps with axial design are increasingly used for left ventricular assist support. The efficacy of this design compared with pulsatile, volume displacement pumps, with respect to characteristics of left ventricular unloading, and exercise performance remains largely unstudied. METHODS AND RESULTS Thirty-four patients undergoing implantation with a pulsatile, ...

Numerical characterization of hemodynamics conditions near aortic valve after implantation of Left Ventricular Assist Device.

Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) are implantable mechanical pumps that temporarily aid the function of the left ventricle. The use of LVADs has been associated with thrombus formation next to the aortic valve and close to the anastomosis region, especially in patients in which the native cardiac function is negligible and the aortic valve remains closed. Stagnation points and recirculati...

Design an Equivalent Left Ventricular Assist Device for Medical Equipment Labs

LVAD is a mechanical pump supporting a weak heart function and blood flow. Sometimes, the heart may not recover fast enough to take over the pumping action immediately after surgery, in such patients a temporary support device has been employed to maintain the pumping action until the patient’s own heart recovers. This device can be considered as a temporary alternative before the process of ar...

Arterial Pulsatility and Aortic Valve Function under Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist

Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices (CF-LVADs) generally operate at a constant speed, which causes a decrease in pulse pressure and pulsatility in the arteries and allegedly may lead to late complications such as aortic insufficiency and gastrointestinal bleeding. The purpose of this study is to increase the arterial pulse pressure and pulsatility while obtaining more physiological ...

3D MRI flow analysis in an in-vitro system modelling continuous left ventricular support: effect of cannula position in the thoracic aorta

Background Continuous blood flow from left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) has become an important treatment option for heart failure patients. However, recent reports indicate that the complex geometric alterations of the vascular system associated with LVAD implantation as well as the introduction of constant flow into the aorta may alter blood flow patterns. These can potentially affect pe...
